On this week's Sunday Travels, we're in for a pleasant surprise - Keystone View Company not only created a number of pretty great stereoviews, but they treated their subjects with respect. A stark contrast to Australia and most of The Netherlands, we'll look at the likely explanation for the nice stereography and barely-racist text.
Sunday Travels is back - with a ridiculous look at Australia, courtesy of KVC. The only thing more common than kangaroos in this set of stereoviews is stereotyping - at which Keystone excelled. Some come aboard, and see all the excitement of 'roos, sheep, and a really big rock!
For our final Sunday in The Netherlands, we're back in Amsterdam - about half a century before Raumbild's "Holland". Expect canals, wooden shoes, quaint street scenes - and a couple of really great stereoviews from KVC!
No better or worse than the first two post-war Raumbild-Verlag Siegfried Brandmüller "Europa" series, this look at Holland in the 1950s pretty much gives us a cursory tour of Amsterdam, as well as an obligatory view of a windmill which looks to have been taken from a car window.
One of the parcels which arrived on "Christmas in July" two days ago contained a wooden box - with about 500 amateur glass stereoviews contained within. Today, we take a look at two boxes at random, in an attempt to determine what this acquisition consists of, who might have taken it, and whether it is, indeed, a cohesive collection, as opposed to a random pile of amateur glass.
The post-war Raumbild-Verlag Siegfried Brandmüller series "Greece" is primarily focused on ruins, as so many Grecian stereoviews seem to be. Still, they come alive wonderfully in this short series.
While he is primarily known for his views of Niagara Falls, and secondarily known for his expeditions to Yosemite, Charles "Chas" Bierstadt got around - most of the views featured here are at neither of his favored locations. Chas got around!
It's not surprising that the newly-formed Tru-Vue company of Rock Island, Illinois decided to try their hand in the advertising market. Nor is it surprising that they chose a local institution for one of their first advertising filmstrips. What is surprising is that this early subject was a girls' Catholic school run by the Salesian Sisters - and that the stereo photography is actually pretty darn good, considering!
With most sets of stereographic images, you can get a sense of what's going on from the captions, action, provenance - all sorts of things. Here, I'm more or less at a loss - but the stereoviews are pretty darn cool!
In the spirit of the holiday season, I present the Carnaval de Nice from 1933, from a fantastic set of glass positive slides in my collection. I hope that these pictures of joy, jubilation, and celebration will bring happiness to my readers, regardless of which (if any) holidays they are celebrating around this time of year - and that they will transform these feelings into kindnesses towards others. Because that's truly in the spirit of any joyous celebration, is it not?
